Wondering what to look for in a mouthwash? There is actually more to know when it comes to mouthwash other than just picking a random bottle off of the shelf based on the label, color, or flavor.

They have different purposes:

• To freshen breath
• To help prevent cavities with fluoride
• To help prevent plaque buildup with germ-killing ingredients

Some have alcohol and some are alcohol-free. Mouthwashes with alcohol can feel harsher on the mouth (more of a burning sensation) or cause dryness of the mouth. People who experience dry mouth from certain medications or illnesses should definitely choose an alcohol-free mouthwash.

Dry mouth is also known to contribute to bad breath, so if the mouthwash is alcohol-free, you don’t have to worry about it exasperating that. So, in sum, when in doubt, choose alcohol-free and it will be a better option for the whole family all the way around.

Do you have a sensitive mouth? It would be best for you to choose a natural or alcohol-free mouthwash as well, especially if you just had some dental work or dental surgery. You may want to keep an eye out for mouthwashes that contact chamomile or aloe vera for a more soothing effect.

Still not sure which type of mouthwash would be best for you? Ask your dentist or dental hygienist for recommendations!
