When it comes to going to the dentist, there is a stigma of fear attached for many people. In fact, approximately 40% of Canadians would rather avoid their bi-yearly visits if possible. Many do…but that is not good for obvious reasons. You only get one set of teeth after all!

In most cases, people walk into the dental office feeling squirmish, but leave with a smile on their face saying “It really wasn’t as bad as I thought!”

Here are some tips that can help you conquer the fear and anxiety of going to the dentist:

(1)  Find a dentist who makes you feel at ease and comfortable when you meet them. A personality that jives with yours can make all the difference in helping you relax. It is a good idea to make the first visit a checkup and dental cleaning vs. a more intense procedure.

(2)  Communicate your concerns with your dentist. They will know to be extra gentle with you and they will be thorough in explaining step by step what they are doing so that you feel more calm.

(3)  Keep in mind how far dentistry has come. It is not like it was in the 1950’s!

(4)  Ask about sedation dentistry, what your options are, and how it may be beneficial for you.

(5)  Do what you can to relax before your appointment – meditate, workout, attend a yoga class, go for a walk, listen to calming music.

(6)  Book your appointment early in the day to get it over with vs. letting it weigh on your mind.

(7)  Establish a “stop” signal with your dentist or dental hygienist in case you need to take a break.

It is also important to note that if you have children, do not show your fear to them. A common reason people are scared of the dentist is because that fear was passed down from their parents or siblings. Know that your behavior towards the dentist can strongly influence your children.
