Gingivitis and periodontitis are both conditions of the gums and are closely related, however, gingivitis usually shows up before and will not necessarily lead to periodontitis as long as it gets under control.

Gingivitis refers to inflamed gums – caused by bacteria building up in plaque. If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, this is a clear indication that you have gingivitis. You will likely also suffer from halitosis due to the excess bacteria in your mouth.

When this is not treated, it can lead to actual gum disease (periodontitis). This is very serious because it can actually lead to tooth loss. Yikes! The inner layer of gum and bone pull away from the teeth. This creates pockets that can then become infected. Plaque then has the ability to grow below the gum line – destroying both gum tissue and bone. The thought of this is enough to make anyone cringe!

Periodontitis is quite rare in younger people. They are more likely to suffer from gingivitis. Either way, it is so important that everyone practices good dental hygiene at every age to prevent either condition.

Other factors contribute to gum disease such as:

  • Poor dental care – not brushing properly twice a day for two minutes per day
  • Diseases (Your immune system is not as strong as a healthy person)
  • Changes in hormones
  • Certain medications (always consult with your doctor)
  • Smoking
  • Family medical history
