A dental implant is a small post made of biocompatible metal, such as titanium. Secured into a socket left empty by a missing tooth, an implant fuses to jawbone tissue to become stable. Functioning as a replacement tooth root, the implant can support a single dental crown or a few implants can secure a bridge, partial, or denture.
Without implants, jawbone is likely to deteriorate as the body sends nutrients elsewhere. Through the years, the jaw can become smaller, creating a sunken appearance known as facial collapse. Because implant posts stimulate the jaw like natural tooth roots would, the body delivers phosphorus and calcium to keep jawbone tissue strong.
Implants secure a dental prosthetic, so anyone who needs one or more teeth replaced can consider implants as an alternative to traditional bridges, partials, or dentures. Ideal candidates have good oral health and dense, strong jawbone tissue. However, patients with unhealthy mouths can undergo treatments to become an implant candidate. First, our dentists will need to assess your oral health, x-rays, and bone density to determine whether you might be a good implant candidate. She will take time to talk with you about your oral health history, home care routine, and lifestyle factors that impact dental health. She will also explain the process of having implants placed, and you should ask questions to make sure that you completely understand. Our dentists will manage your entire case. You will, however, undergo outpatient implant surgery at a local periodontist’s or oral surgeon’s office. After the implants are secured in your jaw, bone will fuse to the implants during a phase called osseointegration. This healing period lasts approximately three to six months.
Once your dental implants are anchored securely in your jaw, our dentists will design your prosthetic crown or bridge. They will also deliver your new prosthetic, make sure it fits properly and comfortably, and see you for follow-up visits.
Dental implants can last throughout life, if good oral health is maintained and the jawbone remains solid. Brush and floss normally, and attend checkups and cleanings as advised by our staff. Should your prosthetic become worn or damaged, our dentists can repair or replace it in our office.
