One of the most exciting times in life is finding out that a baby is on the way! When it comes to pregnancy, the health of your mouth is very important.
Good Oral Hygiene
For starters, it is important to keep up with a good oral hygiene routine – brushing and flossing. Always look for the ADA Seal on products (toothpaste, oral rinse, toothbrushes, floss etc.). Ask your dentist for advice on the best products to use.
Regular Dental Visits
Just as important a good oral hygiene at home is keeping up with regular dental cleanings and checkups. That said, be sure to keep your doctor aware of your pregnancy / how far along you are in your pregnancy. Advise them of any medications you are taking, and also if your doctor has told you that you have a high-risk pregnancy. They may want to postpone certain treatments until after you deliver your baby.
Concerned about x-rays? We try to defer taking x-rays until the baby is born and try to manage dental emergencies without them, however, if it is absolutely necessary, the staff at your dental clinic will be sure to cover you with a lead apron that will protect your organs from exposure to radiation.
Gingivitis
Some women tend to become more prone to gingivitis while pregnant. Left untreated, this can lead to more serious issues. Again, keeping your teeth clean and healthy can help prevent this from happening.
Nutrition
Nutrition is obviously super important for the overall health of you and your baby. It is also key for the development of their teeth. Your baby will start to develop teeth anywhere from the third month to the sixth month. Ensure that you are getting proper amounts of Vitamins A, C, D, calcium, protein, and phosphorous. Help prevent tooth decay by choosing foods low in sugar. Drink lots of water. If you have trouble with nausea, try eating small amounts of healthy foods throughout the day. To prevent the risk of birth defects, ensure that you are consuming an appropriate amount of folic acid. Ask your doctor for advice and/or consult with a nutritionist.
