There is more to getting a filling than just going to your dentist and carrying on as usual afterwards. Here are some tips to maintain strong fillings and keep your mouth healthy in general:

  • No food or drink until after the anesthetic wears off so that you don’t accidentally bite yourself or damage your filling
  • Avoid cold or hot foods that may trigger your tooth sensitivity
  • Keep your mouth clean and brush and floss as usual
  • Get a mouthguard if you have a history of grinding your teeth, as you could wear down the surface of your teeth and filling(s)
  • Reduce sugary and acidic food & beverages
  • Limit teeth staining drinks such as coffee, tea, and wine
  • Choose alcohol-free toothpaste and mouthwash, as alcohol can affect the durability of your filling(s)
  • Stay away from biting your nails, which can negatively affect both your fillings and teeth
  • Refrain from smoking and chewing tobacco
  • Chew non-stick sugar-free gum after meals when you are not able to brush right away
