Coffee is the first thing that crosses many people’s minds the minute they wake up. Many feel as though they can’t start their day without it. The question is though…do they know how it is affecting their teeth?
How Coffee Stains Teeth
The enamel on your teeth is what protects them, but it also contains microscopic pits and ridges. These pits and ridges can hold teeny particles of food and beverages.
Coffee…in addition to tea and soda…have darker pigments. Therefore, when the particles from these drinks gets into the teeth, it can create pesky stains and yellowing.
Adding milk or cream doesn’t make a difference if you were hoping it would! Drinking water would be the ideal solution of course…although it’s probably not realistic.
So is there anything you can do to prevent staining as best as possible?
- Try to drink your coffee at designated times during your day vs. sipping throughout the whole day. After drinking, rinse with water or better yet – brush your teeth!
- Be sure to use a whitening toothpaste
- Get regular dental cleanings at your dental clinic (every 6 months)
